Why do banks sponsor the majority of events?

I was reading a post that mentioned Scotia Bank receiving a gold marketing award for sponsorship programs. It is not the major banks that sponsor these events; it is you and I.
It makes me sick to think that the events which are being sponsored by Scotia Bank are only receiving 'higher service fee money'.

The banking institution generates a favourable image through sponsorship marketing. The problem I have with this is that millions are spent on it, and that money comes directly from us, the people that use the banks.
If I am a participant in the event they sponsor and I have an account with them, why do I care to see their image splashed throughout the location...I already know I am being ripped off by them, and this only serves as a reminder for why Royal Bank, Scotia Bank, CIBC, and the like, should not be allowed to sponsor events.
